How the Physical Presence Requirement Works
To become a Canadian citizen, you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the 5-year period immediately before the date you sign your application.
This means you can be absent from Canada for up to 730 days (2 years) within that 5-year window and still qualify. The days do not need to be consecutive — they are cumulative.
Use this calculator to track your days of physical presence. Enter your PR card receive date, add any trips outside Canada, and the calculator will tell you if you meet the requirement or how many more days you need.
