How the Physical Presence Requirement Works
To become a Canadian citizen, you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the 5-year period immediately before the date you sign your application.
This means you can be absent from Canada for up to 730 days (2 years) within that 5-year window and still qualify. The days do not need to be consecutive — they are cumulative.

Pre-PR Days Count (Partially)
Each day physically present in Canada before becoming a permanent resident counts as half a day, up to a maximum credit of 365 days (from 730 days of pre-PR presence). This includes time as a temporary resident, worker, student, or protected person.
Other Eligibility Requirements
Physical presence is just one requirement. You also need to:
- Be a permanent resident of Canada
- Have filed your taxes for at least 3 years within the 5-year period
- Pass the citizenship test (if aged 18-54)
- Demonstrate adequate language skills in English or French (CLB/NCLC 4+)
